Xavi reeling from Copa del Rey defeat as Barca confirm Fati thigh injury

Xavi admitted his Barcelona team failed to match the intensity of Athletic Bilbao as they tumbled out of the Copa del Rey at the last-16 stage, another blow in a dismal season.

Barcelona may yet claw their way into the Champions League places in LaLiga, but their trophy pursuit looks doomed to failure. Beaten by Real Madrid last week in the Supercopa semi-finals, a 3-2 defeat after extra time against Athletic on Thursday was another bitter pill for head coach Xavi and his players.

Add in the blow of losing substitute Ansu Fati to what Barcelona described as a femoral biceps injury in his left thigh , and it was a calamitous night at San Mames for the visitors.

Barca are out of the LaLiga title reckoning, and Europa League play-off opponents Napoli will surely fan…

Agnelli: Juventus is bigger than any man

Andrea Agnelli says Juventus is bigger than any man following his surprise resignation as chairman this week.

Juve announced after an emergency meeting on Monday that Agnelli, vice-president Pavel Nedved and managing director Maurizio Arrivabene had all quit their roles.

It comes amid an investigation into alleged tax fraud, which Juventus have denied, and on the back of the club registering a record loss of €254.3million for 2021-22.

Agnelli had held his position as chairman of Juve since 2010, when becoming the fourth member of his family to run the club after his father, uncle and grandfather.

Juve won nine Serie A titles during Agnelli s tenure, but it was agreed that stepping aside was the best option for all parties involved.

Juventus is…

City to accept Mahrez offer, Newcastle enter David race, Inter to sign Cuadrado, and more: The Daily Transfer Round Up – Monday, July 17

Mahrez set for Al-Ahli switch

Riyad Mahrez is reportedly on the verge of leaving Manchester City for Al-Ahli. An offer of £30 million for the services of the 32-year-old winger has been made after he agreed personal terms with the Saudi club, and the Premier League champions are expected to accept it. The medical preceding the move is believed to be already scheduled.

Though he hasn t exactly been a regular starter lately at City, Mahrez was still an important part of the squad and manager Pep Guardiola will surely want someone to replace him before the season starts.

England’s Euro 2024 qualifier against Ukraine in September will be played in the Polish city of Wroclaw.

Gareth Southgate’s men have enjoyed a 100 per cent start to European Championship qualification, with four wins from their four Group C matches.

Howe ´absolutely detests´ losing but sees ´danger´ in Newcastle´s unbeaten run

Eddie Howe has detailed how he absolutely detests losing matches – something Newcastle United have not done in the Premier League since August s trip to Liverpool.

But ahead of the reverse fixture at St James Park on Saturday, Howe s focus is on winning, rather than preserving a record unbeaten run.

Newcastle have suffered only a sole defeat in the league this season – the fewest in the division – and that loss came in particularly painful circumstances as Liverpool s Fabio Carvalho scored a 98th-minute winner at Anfield.

Since then, the Magpies are unbeaten in 17 in the league, a sequence that has tied their best ever streak, set in the Championship in 2010.

Newcastle have also advanced to the EFL Cup final, but they suffered an upset in the FA Cup…

Ukraine given deadline to make up Euro 2012 delays

UEFA president Michel Platini on Thursday told Ukraine it had a two-month deadline to make up lost time in preparations for co-hosting the 2012 European Championships with Poland.

I said that in the coming two months, they have to show some strong signs that Ukraine will progress, former France star Platini said after meeting with Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych.

It s not an ultimatum, he said, adding that Yanukovych knows that there is work to do but he gives all guarantees that the Euro 2012 will take place in the best conditions in Ukraine .

Platini expressed his hope that all four bidding Ukrainian cities would be able to host matches in the tournament, but warned that if outstanding issues were not resolved, only two venues would be used as opposed …

´There is a need for respect´ – Osimhen´s agent rubbishes Al-Ahli reports

Victor Osimhen s agent insists the striker will not swap Napoli for Saudi Arabia despite reports linking him with a move to Al-Ahli.

Osimhen has been strongly linked with an exit since he fired the Partenopei to their third Scudetto in 2022-23, but he stayed put for a miserable 2023-24 campaign that saw them finish 10th in Serie A.

Earlier this month, Napoli director Giovanni Manna confirmed Osimhen had requested a move, with Premier League giants Chelsea and Arsenal touted as potential destinations.

Last week, reports suggested Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli were close to agreeing a fee of around €65million for the striker, but he is unwilling to negotiate personal terms with them.

On Monday, the Nigerian s agent Roberto Calenda took to X to outline Osi…
