Ten MLB Teams Who Are Already Toast In 2024

Just over two months into the 2024 season, it is not exactly clear who will win the World Series, but there does seem to be definitive evidence as to who will not.At least 10 teams – five from each league – are in wait-’til-next-year mode before the middle of June, when attendances traditionally start to rise as temperatures climb and school lets out for the summer.Lessons learned have been rough for some clubs, including one that has made the playoffs in each of the previous five seasons, as teams have moved beyond the 60-game mark this season.AMERICAN LEAGUENot their year: Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Angels, Oakland Athletics, Detroit Tigers and Tampa Bay Rays. The most obvious non-contender resides in the AL Central as the Chicago White Sox might be close to parting ways with manager Pedro Grifol. Regardless of whether Grifol did a good job or not, the team’s current struggles are mostly on a previous rebuilding plan that included the arrival of some suspect characters disguised as top prospects. If the Angels have shown an ability to pitch amid a retooled staff, but if they couldn’t make a charge with Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout powering the offense, it won’t happen now that Ohtani is gone and Trout spent most of the first half on the IL.The A’s look like they will top win projections, but they were so low that it will take more than a better-than-we-thought season to make a serious run toward the playoffs. And the Tigers are threatening to play .500 baseball for the first time since 2016, but they will need more improvement over what they have shown. The Rays stand the best chance of this group of getting on a run toward the postseason, but they reside in a division with a pair of playoff slam dunks in the Baltimore Orioles and New York Yankees, leaving too many high rollers to deal with.NATIONAL LEAGUENot gonna make it: Colorado Rockies, Chicago Cubs, St. Louis Cardinals, Miami Marlins and Washington NationalsA stellar people-person with a huge acumen for pitching, Rockies manager Bud Black deserves a run of success, and his team has been able to surprise for stretches. But Colorado needs a bullpen to back up starters like Cal Quantrill and Austin Gomber. Pro tip: Close your eyes when Black speaks and hear the Will Ferrell cadence. The Cubs can typically count on meetings with the Pirates and Reds to pile up victories, but that is not happening with enough frequency this season as they struggle with some of the improved teams in their division.Last season, the Cardinals had their worst season in nearly three decades, then placed their outfield on the IL to start this season and haven’t been able to match up with top teams so far. The Marlins started the season 0-9 and have yet to recover.Through games of this past weekend, only two teams had a worse OPS than the Nationals and that was the Marlins and the lowly White Sox. To make matters worse, opponents had a .253 batting average against Washington pitching through the weekend, fourth highest in the game.
